Carrying is just making a new bundle

Grades 3–4

The big idea

When the ones overflow past ten, we bundle ten of them into a new ten.

Think of it like an egg carton that holds exactly ten: Once you collect ten loose eggs, they snap into a full carton, and that carton is the 'carry'.

Fill the carton

You have 8 loose eggs and get 5 more. Fill a carton of ten first (that uses up 10) and 3 eggs are left loose. So 8 + 5 is one full carton (ten) and 3 loose: 13.
