Keeping the scale level
Grades 5β6The big idea
An equation is a balanced scale: do the same to both sides and it stays level.
Think of it like a balance scale that must stay level: Whatever you take off one pan you must take off the other, or the scale tips and the truth breaks.
This one matters most. Algebra is absolutely essential. It is the gateway every later subject runs through: fractions and percentages, geometry, science, money, coding, and every grade of math after this. Nothing past here opens without it, so this is the one strand no child should skip.
Don't tip the scale
A balance has a mystery bag plus 2 blocks on the left, and 6 blocks on the right, sitting level. To find the bag, remove 2 blocks from BOTH pans at once. Still level: now the bag balances 4.
π Take the same number off both sides to keep it level and free the bag.
Wonder out loud
These are good questions to ask: yourself, a grown-up, or your math helper.
