The big idea

Whichever amount is further along the counting path is more.

Think of it like two towers of blocks side by side: The taller tower is 'more': you can see it without counting, because it reaches higher.

Build two towers

Build one tower of 5 and one of 3, right next to each other. Your eyes already know which is more: the taller one. You didn't even have to count.
